Creating the Future: SLIS Strategic Planning Retreat

Educating the next generation of information professionals requires constant attention to changing trends in the field. More than 40 students, faculty, staff and advisory board members met for the SLIS Strategic Planning Retreat, held Oct. 1 at Schoolcraft College in Livonia. Small groups with broad representation met to specifically discuss how SLIS Strategic Plan initiatives will align with the University's 2016-2021 Strategic Plan, released by University President Roy M. Wilson on Sept. 15. The University's five-year plan includes vision and mission statements based on the core values of collaboration, innovation, excellence, diversity and inclusion, and integrity.

Retreat attendees also received an overview of the upcoming accreditation process from SLIS Planning/Assessment Committee Chair Dr. Hermina Anghelescu. Subsequently, groups representing the six standards (Curriculum, Faculty, Students, Administrative/Financial, Physical Resources/Facilities, and Mission/Goals/Objectives) discussed the standards and processes involved with developing a SLIS reaccreditation Program Presentation and preparing for the ALA Committee on Accreditation site visit to occur in September 2016.

Also discussed was the recent "Re-Envisioning the MLS" report from the University of Maryland College of Information Studies and how the report's findings may affect the future of library and information science in general and SLIS in particular.
