Digitizing a Legendary Voice: The Ernie Harwell Project

SLIS students hit a home run preserving one of Detroit's most famous sounds. The Ernie Harwell Collection at the Burton Collection at the Detroit Public Library houses an amazing collection of American baseball memorabilia. The late Harwell, a knowledgeable baseball historian, was the announcer for the Detroit Tigers for 42 years. Several SLIS students have assisted the Burton by digitizing 40 cassette tapes and 12 reels of audio, working with audio equipment in the Reuther Library and SLIS Digital Media Projects lab. The tapes provided valuable insight into this iconic announcer, including a demo reel that he used to audition. Additionally, students learned the care necessary to migrate obsolescent formats into more accessible digital recordings.
