Dr. Turrini Publishes Book

By Jennifer Meekhof, SAA President

Dr. Joseph Turrini, SLIS Professor and Coordinator of the Archival Administration Certificate Program, had his new book, The End of Amateurism in American Track and Field, published in May of 2010. The book was published by the University of Illinois Press as a part of its Sports and Society Series. His writing uncovers the struggle of track and field athletes in the 1950s as they fought to change their sport through legislation and labor relations systems. Due to their efforts, track and field athletes were able to work in a professional system by the 1990s. The book is the fruit of numerous oral histories with athletes and officials and years of research at archives across the country. Relieved to complete the project, Turrini looks forward to diving into new research. Turrini has been a faculty member with SLIS since 2008. He has published articles on sport, labor and archival history in a variety of scholarly publications. He is active in local and national archival organizations.

Congratulations, Dr. Turrini!
