PLG Hosts Public Librarian Panel Discussion

Students sometimes wonder how the ideals that drew them to librarianship will actually play out when they enter the workforce. The Progressive Librarians Guild (PLG) chapter at SLIS held a provocative panel discussion on May 20th to answer that question with perspectives from public librarians from across Metro Detroit. Erin Helmrich, Teen Services Librarian at Ann Arbor District Library, MLIS '96, Robbie Flowers, MLIS '03, Children's Librarian and Branch Manager of the Bowen Branch of Detroit Public Library (DPL) and Mike Wells, MLIS '74, Coordinator of TIP (The Information Place) at DPL and President of the UAW Local 2200 (for librarians and library workers) all spoke candidly about the struggle to "walk your talk" on the job. There was no party line and they didn't always agree. Current and former SLIS students, staff and faculty in attendance were thoroughly engaged and had their viewpoints challenged in a collegial manner. Thanks to Meghan Mott of PLG for organizing the event. The SLIS community looks forward to future panel discussions on different themes of interest to progressive librarians.
