The Wayne State University School of Information Sciences and the Department of History have announced a new joint degree program offering a Master of Arts in Public History and a Master of Library and Information Science.

This new joint degree complements the current joint MLIS and MA in History program. The Master of Arts in Public History, now in its third year, prepares students for careers that make historical research accessible to a public audience, in fields outside of academia (museum administration, public policy, historical preservation, archival administration, tourism, etc.). The MLIS, paired with the MAPH program, prepares students to be both information management professionals and public historians, addressing an academic and professional need found in many organizations.

Graduates of the program benefit from the joint preparation in public history and library and information science and increase their potential for finding employment in either field. Students are prepared to enter a new workforce with the skills to appraise and describe historical records, create and maintain websites, preserve electronic documents, and communicate with a public audience. Upon successful completion of this program students will be prepared for employment in a wide range of settings including libraries, archives, museums, state and federal agencies, and the private sector.
