SIS Student Organizes WSU Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon

Wayne State University celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, and SIS student Jodi Coalter wants to make sure that the world has the correct facts about all aspects of the institution. It sounds like a tall order, but for Jodi, it's simply a matter of coordinating the right resources - the powerful platform of Wikipedia and the fact-finding and editing capabilities of SIS students, alumni, and faculty.

Jodi has planned a Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon that will take place on March 22, 2018 from 2 PM to 7 PM at the David Adamany Undergraduate Library. Participants are also encouraged to join in the event via video conference. A team of volunteers and the members of the student chapter of ASIS&T are also helping to coordinate the event.

The inspiration for the Edit-A-Thon came to Jodi as she attended an OCLC class on the topic of Wikipedia in Libraries. As Jodi reviewed the Wayne State University Wikipedia entry and associated entries, she noticed a trend - many pages had errors or read like advertising. "Wayne State's page sounded like a massive advertisement," explained Jodi, an MLIS student who is also earning her Information Management certificate. "I thought this would be a great way to not only support the University but also support Wikipedia and do my part to make it better."
