Even with the budgets cut, libraries are still playing vital roles in the economic life of their communities. Just ask Clyde Scoles, SLIS Advisory Board member, who recently published an editorial in the Toledo Blade, "Public library is a Toledo economic engine". Scoles, director of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, showcased the success of his county's library as it continued to meet demands in spite of reduced funding and hours. According to Scoles, the ongoing tough times have only increased demands for library services.

"The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library attracted almost 3 million visits last year - more than any other institution in the county," he writes. "The library remains devoted to strengthening Toledo's diverse communities. Some 500 organizations partner with the library through sponsorships, in-kind donations and collaborations to present high-quality programs to community residents at little or no cost."

Strong Urban Libraries continue to be a bedrocks of their communities. Way to go in Toledo!
