SLIS Student Awarded ALA David H. Clift Scholarship
SLIS student, Laura Manley, has been awarded the 2010 David H. Clift Scholarship from ALA. Named for a former director of the American Library Association, the scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and evidence of commitment to a career in librarianship. As the current president of the ALA student chapter at SLIS with ambitious plans already underway for the upcoming year, Laura has certainly excelled in all three areas thus far at SLIS. In fact, she is already looking into pursuing PhD in librarianship after completing her MLIS.
Commenting on her scholarship award, Laura offered the following words of advice to fellow students:
"Each year ALA gives over $300,000 in scholarship money to students seeking a career in librarianship from an ALA-accredited school. I wholeheartedly encourage students to apply for this and other scholarships. Throughout my educational experience I have been awarded numerous scholarships. What people do not realize is that many scholarships are not as competitive as they may think. I suggest when applying for scholarships read the directions carefully. Many scholarship applications are not even considered because they did not follow a specific format or are incomplete. Being a scholarship recipient is also a great thing to put on your resume or curriculum vitae. In this competitive job market it could very well be the sparkle that makes you stand apart from other applicants."
