Career path: Diversity, equity and inclusion (inclusive excellence)
Librarians are dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) within library services and collections and fostering inclusive library environments that serve diverse communities. Library and information professionals actively promote diversity within collections, organize inclusive programs and provide training to enhance cultural competence among library staff. In addition to their focus on diversity, librarians recognize the unique needs of individuals with disabilities, working to integrate materials, technologies and design features that ensure equitable access to information.
By extending their efforts to include a focus on accessibility, librarians contribute to the creation of truly inclusive spaces. This holistic approach not only enriches library collections and programs but also reinforces the principles of social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion by ensuring that everyone can fully participate in and benefit from library services.
