SIS Scholarships

The annual Wayne State University scholarship application period runs from October 10 to March 1 each year.    

Applications will be accepted for the SIS scholarships listed below. Additional WSU scholarships are also available and are listed in the application system.

How to apply for SIS scholarships

Please visit wayne.scholarshipuniverse.com and submit all required materials no later than March 1.   

Students must complete the university's general application and the school's supplemental application to qualify for the maximum number of scholarships. 

Scholarships will be awarded in the fall and winter semesters in the academic year subsequent to award notification.   

SIS award amounts range from $500-$3000 per scholarship. University scholarship amounts vary.  

Recipients will be notified no later than June 30.

Benedetti, Rosemary Endowed Scholarship

GPA Requirement: 3.0
Type of Scholarship: Departmental

Rosemary Benedetti graduated with a bachelor's degree from the College of Education and a master's degree from the College of Library Science at Wayne State. Benedetti went on to work as an elementary school library for the Detroit Public Schools for 33 years. This scholarship fund was established to recognize scholastic achievement and assist students pursuing a career in school librarianship.  

Dean's Merit Scholarship

GPA Requirement: 3.75
Standing: Graduate
Type of Scholarship: Departmental

Possess a minimum of 3.75 undergraduate grade point average. Possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Be admitted to the School of Information Sciences. Register for at least six credit hours in the Fall semester. Have completed fewer than 13 hours toward the MLIS or MSIS degree.

Ellison, Sallie Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Any graduate student enrolled in the School of Information Sciences. Recipients are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement; a grade point average of at least 3.0; qualities of character and leadership, and financial need. Preference will be given to full- or part-time graduate students majoring or otherwise demonstrating a strong interest in the School of Information Sciences.

Francis, Gloria A. Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Any graduate student enrolled in the School of Information Sciences. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement with a grade point average of at least 3.0 and qualities of character and leadership. Financial need may be considered.

Grazier, Margaret Hayes Endowed Scholarship

Any graduate student enrolled in the School of Information Sciences. Recipients are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement; a grade point average of at least 3.0; qualities of character and leadership, and financial need. Students who demonstrate an interest in school library media are particularly encouraged to apply.

Holley, Robert P. Endowed Scholarship

Applications will be accepted from students admitted into Wayne State University’s School of Information Sciences. It is the donor's preference that recipients live in urban areas and demonstrate a desire to provide library service to underrepresented minorities.

Larson, Miriam T. Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Any graduate student enrolled in the School of Information Sciences who has declared a specialization in health sciences/medical libraries. Recipients shall be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement with a grade point average of at least 3.0 and qualities of character and leadership. 

Library and Information Science Alumni Scholarship

Any graduate student enrolled in the School of Information Sciences who has completed at least six (6) credit hours. Recipients must possess a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Recipients will be selected based upon scholarship, qualities of character, leadership, and financial need.

Long, Margery A. Scholarship for Archival Administration

Standing: Graduate
Type of Scholarship: Departmental

Named after longtime Audiovisual Archivist Margery Long, who began her career in 1972 at Wayne State University's Archives of Labor History and Urban Affairs. This scholarship fund recognizes scholastic achievement and encourages continued academic progress. The award provides assistance to students in financing their education in the field of Archival Administration at Wayne State University.

Mika, Joseph J. and Marianne Hartzell-Mika Endowed Scholarship

GPA Requirement: 3.5

Any graduate student enrolled in the School of Information Sciences (minimum 3.5 GPA). This scholarship was established by long-time SIS Professor and former Director Joseph Mika and his wife, Marianne Hartzell-Mika, to recognize high scholastic achievement and to assist students currently working in a library.

Pepper, Roger S. and Muriel A. Endowed Scholarship

GPA Requirement: 3.0
Standing: Graduate
Type of Scholarship: Departmental

Award of variable amount, which recognizes scholastic achievement (minimum 3.0 GPA) and provides financial assistance to full-time or part-time graduate or undergraduate students enrolled in or accepted for study in the School of Information Sciences. Applicants need not demonstrate financial need. It is the donors' preference that the recipient show a demonstrated focus on new media and special or school librarianship.

Phillips, Edith B. Endowed Scholarship

Any graduate student enrolled in the School of Information Sciences. Recipients are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement; a grade point average of at least 3.0; qualities of character and leadership, and financial need. Preference will be given to students intending to concentrate in technical services and/or collection development.

Rockall, Diane M. Scholarship

Any graduate student enrolled in the School Information Sciences. Recipients will be selected based on scholastic achievement (minimum grade point average of 3.5) and financial need.

Russell, Clara Lulis Memorial Scholarship

Any graduate student enrolled in the School of Information Sciences. Recipients are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement; a grade point average of at least 3.0; qualities of character and leadership, and financial need. Students pursuing public librarianship are particularly encouraged to apply.

Samarjian, Charles Memorial Scholarship

Any graduate student enrolled in the School of Information Sciences. Recipients are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement; a grade point average of at least 3.0; qualities of character and leadership. Students who demonstrate an interest in antiquarian/rare book librarianship are particularly encouraged to apply.

Sherwood, Robert L. Scholarship

A graduate student enrolled in the School of Information Sciences with a specialization in public librarianship. Preference will be given to students formerly employed by the Herrick District Library. If no qualified former employee applies, preference may then be given to residents of Michigan’s Ottawa and Allegan Counties.

Any graduate student enrolled in the School of Information Sciences. Recipients shall be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement with a grade point average of at least 3.0 and qualities of character and leadership. Preference given to students with career goals in academic librarianship.

Trepczynski, Cymbrie Pratt Endowed Scholarship for Archival Administration

GPA Requirement: 3.0

Type of Scholarship: Departmental

This scholarship was established in honor of Cymbrie Pratt Trepczynski who graduated with her MLIS and Archival Administration certificate from Wayne State in 1993 and pursued a career as an archivist working on projects for GM, Detroit Federation of Teachers and the Reuther Library of Labor and Urban Affairs at WSU. The award recognizes scholastic achievement and provides assistance to students in the archival administration graduate certificate program.

Williams, Carolyn R. Endowed Scholarship

Groen, Paulette E. Endowed Scholarship

Type:  Departmental

This scholarship fund was established to recognize scholastic achievement, to encourage continued progress, and to provide assistance to students in financing their SIS education. Recipients must demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate a career commitment to public, urban, children and youth and/or special librarianship.

Bath, Isabel James Endowed Scholarship

GPA Requirement: 3.5

Type: Departmental

This scholarship fund was established by the Bath Family Foundation in honor of Isabel James Bath, class of 1952. The scholarship fund recognizes scholastic achievement, to encourage continued progress, and to provide assistance to students in financing their education in the School of Information Sciences. Recipients need not demonstrate financial need.  Preference will be given to students who demonstrate plans to serve as a school librarian in Michigan or who wish to be a public or academic librarian within the state of Michigan.

Casey, Genevieve M. Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship recognizes scholastic achievement, encourage continue progress, and provide assistance to students in the School of Information Sciences who demonstrate a commitment to serving disadvantage and under-served communities. Applicants must demonstrate a financial need.

Field, Judith J. Scholarship

GPA Requirement: 3.0
Standing: Graduate
Type of Scholarship: Departmental

Award of variable amount recognizing scholastic achievement (minimum 3.0 GPA) and innovation in approach to librarianship. Applicants must submit a statement explaining how they have demonstrated innovative thinking in their career or career preparations to solve problems in the workplace, and what he or she hopes to accomplish as a result of receiving the scholarship.

Spang, Lothar Memorial Scholarship

Any graduate student enrolled in the School of Information Sciences. Recipients are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement; a grade point average of at least 3.0; qualities of character and leadership, and financial need. Students who demonstrate career plans to serve as a school or public librarian in underserved urban communities are particularly encouraged to apply.

Wells, Michael Sullivan Digital Librarianship Scholarship Fund

GPA Requirement: 3.2
Type of Scholarship: Departmental

Any graduate student enrolled in the School of Information Sciences and with a focus on archival administration.  Recipients must possess a grade point average of 3.2 or higher and demonstrate a career interest in digital librarianship.  

Gray, Andrea Elizabeth Still Endowed Scholarship

Stanton, Beth Lynn Memorial Scholarship

This fund, named in memory of research librarian and alumna Beth Lynn Stanton, is available to graduate students pursing a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) or a Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) degree in the School of Information Sciences. Candidates who are in good academic standing and have a stated interest in an information career in business settings or in academic or public libraries with an emphasis in business information will be considered.
